For our latest We Are Not Dead Inside feature series, we sat down with the modular synth wizard George Chua to gain more insights to his works and him as a person. He is an artist based in Singapore, active since the late nineties. As an instigator and explorer of the other worldly potential of sound, he has no interest in developing a singular style or genre of music. Apart from his solo work and performances, his collaborative interests include live improvisation with sound, unconventional strategies for soundtracks and sound design for film and theatre.

Over the years he has made a couple of releases, the most recent one titled Smokescreen is available for grabs over at Ujikaji Records. He has also made self releases. One that we highly recommend checking out is 独孤九剑 which traverses through heavy glitch rhythms and vocal stutters.

Tell us more about yourself and what you do.

I work with sound within different context. I also move with my body. These are two aspects of my practice and sometimes overlapped. I hope to use them as vehicles of expression as uncompromising as possible; untainted by the needs of commerce and the anxiety of audience building.

What got you into modular synthesisers?

My desire for sonic exploration was seduced by the blinking lights.

What are some of the greatest experiences you had as an artist/musician?

My greatest experiences of art/music making arise from a place of immersion when the sense of self disappear in the process.

What are the things that you do that make you happy (or not dead inside)?

Things and doing things offer no lasting happiness. I aspire to live a life of happiness apart from things. I enjoy doing things more when I don't need things to be happy.

How do you stay motivated to do what you love?

If I love honestly then no motivation is needed. Love will reward that by moving me along.

If you liked this short article about George, he has also contributed an amazing mix to us. If you have yet to check the mix out, you can find it here
